Top types of digital marketing

We keep hearing this term “Digital marketing” again and again and again but still, there are some people who don’t know what it means and how does it work. Even most of the people who’re aware of the term Digital marketing don’t really know what Digital marketing can exactly do.

This term actually started in 2000’s but it has been around for a much longer time. It was around when they used to advertise stuff on the newly invented device called Radio. But in today’s world, the definition of digital marketing has changed a lot.

Digital marketing Guru, Neil Patel, describes it as “its advertising delivered through digital channels. Channels such as social media, mobile applications, email, web applications, search engines, websites, or any new digital channel”

Any service or product offered to you on your smartphone, laptop or any other electronic device is part of a digital marketing campaign. Most people think that it just means showing ads on YouTube videos, Facebook and Instagram. But actually the promotion mails coming in your Gmail Inbox are also a form of Digital marketing.

Interested? Let’s talk about it more. Today, we’ll be looking at the three most used types of digital marketing. These methods are highly effective and are being widely used all around the world.

Affiliate marketing

Imagine dollars rushing into your account while you’re fast asleep at night. Sounds amazing right? Well, that’s a successful affiliate marketing practice does. Let’s see the definition first.

According to Marketing Guru, Neil Patel,

“Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s (or company’s) products. You find a product you like, promote it to others and earn a piece of the profit for each sale that you make.”

“Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s (or company’s) products. You find a product you like, promote it to others and earn a piece of the profit for each sale that you make.”

To make it simpler, you promote someone’s product and ear commission on every sale they make because of you. Now, there are 4 important parties in the whole affiliate marketing equation.

  • The Merchant
  • The affiliate
  • The consumer
  • The network

The first party in this equation is the merchant. This is the party that is responsible for the production of the product. Now, it can be a large company like Sony, Samsung etc. OR, it can be a small business owner who’s selling products made in his own backyard. It doesn’t matter who the merchant is, because anyone can start an affiliate marketing program.

Affiliates or the publishers are the second party in the affiliate marketing cycle. Just like the merchant, this party can also be a whole company or a single person running a blog from his basement.

Depending on the type of affiliate marketer, the revenue can be from a couple of thousands to millions of dollars monthly. An affiliate is the main party in this specific marketing technique because the result will be nothing if this party is taken out from this equation.

After the affiliates are done with promoting a product, the next party steps in the equation and that is the consumer. The consumer goes to the product page after being recommended by the affiliate. If he makes a purchase there, the affiliate will get a margin of profit on that product.

This may seem a bit odd to you but still, the network plays an important role in the affiliate marketing equation. If the network that affiliate is using to promote the product is preferred by most people then it will be good for him and more consumers will purchase the product.

Content Marketing

It is said that “Content is the king”. The main reason behind it is that you need powerful content at the center of your marketing. First let’s see what content marketing actually is.

Content marketing has been around for a far longer time. Ever seen a billboard? That is the simplest example of content marketing that anyone can give. From the printed flyers being handed to you on a sidewalk to the social media posts shown to you which offer a product or service, you can find content marketing everywhere.

Definition by Neil Patel for content marketing is

“a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly-defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.”

You need to orient your content to show your customers that you really care for them and that you’re paying attention to what they have to say. With the world getting busier and the life getting tougher every single day, attention is the most valuable gift that you can offer to your customers.

Now, you don’t have to be bound to a single format of content. Although, visual content is way more effective than any other content but it doesn’t matter that a blog post can touch your audience’s heart the same way a video can. Following is a list of content formats that you can use for content marketing.

  • Case study
  • Ebooks
  • Illustrations
  • Book summaries
  • Product reviews
  • Opinions
  • Vlog
  • Surveys
  • Quotes

Search Engine Marketing

This is the digital marketing type that most people aren’t aware of but it’s still the top digital marketing type. Search Engine Marketing or simply known as SEM is type of digital marketing that involves a person paying a search engine of his choice to show the ad of his brand on some specific keywords.

Wikipedia gives a detailed definition of SEM

“Search engine marketing (SEM) is a form of internet marketing that involves the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs) through optimization and advertising. SEM may use search engine optimization (SEO), that adjusts or rewrites website content to achieve a higher ranking in search engine results pages or use pay per click listings”

SEM can prove to be a very effective online marketing technique. You need to be extremely good at marketing if you want to try to search engine marketing because it involves spending some serious amount of money so you can’t just play around with things.

The main focus of any search engine marketing campaign is to bring in more sales for the brand. However, there are some brands that don’t focus on sales. They just do it to increase brand awareness, brand exposure and to stay in front of their loyal clients.
