Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): The 2026 Playbook

Published June 25, 2026

Search is splitting in two. Alongside the classic list of blue links, a growing share of people now get answers directly from AI: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews, Claude. If your brand isn’t in those answers, you’re invisible to that audience no matter how well you rank. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is how you fix that.

SEO vs AEO vs GEO

  • SEO earns you a position on the results page.
  • AEO earns you a citation inside an AI’s answer.
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) shapes how AI represents and recommends your brand across generative surfaces.

They’re complementary. The same content foundation, structured well, serves all three.

Why AEO matters now

AI answers increasingly sit between your customer and their decision. The brands that get cited become the default recommendations, and right now, most competitors aren’t optimizing for it. That gap is a rare early-mover advantage, the way SEO was in its first years.

The AEO playbook

  1. Answer first. Put a clear, self-contained answer near the top of each page (a “short answer” or TL;DR). Answer engines extract concise, direct statements.
  2. Structure for machines. Use real headings, numbered lists, comparison tables and FAQs. Add schema (FAQPage, HowTo, Article, Product) so machines understand the content, not just render it.
  3. Ship an llms.txt. A plain-language file describing who you are, what you do and your key pages gives LLMs a clean, authoritative summary to draw on.
  4. Be genuinely authoritative. Facts, specifics, and citations of your own. Vague marketing copy doesn’t get quoted; clear, verifiable statements do.
  5. Build entity signals. Consistent mentions, profiles and citations across the sources these models trust strengthen your brand as a recognized entity.
  6. Measure and iterate. Track which queries surface you in AI answers and where competitors are cited instead, then close the gaps.

What good looks like

A page optimized for AEO reads clearly to a human and hands an answer engine everything it needs: a direct answer, structured supporting detail, schema, and a trustworthy source behind it. That’s the standard we build every page to, including this one.

FAQ

Related questions

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is optimizing your content so AI answer engines can extract, trust and cite it when they respond to users. Instead of just ranking a page, the goal is to be the source the AI quotes in its answer.

How is AEO different from SEO and GEO?

SEO earns position on the classic search results page. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) structures content for extraction by answer engines. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) shapes how generative AI represents and recommends your brand overall. They overlap and are best done together.

How do I get cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?

Publish clear, factual, well-structured content that directly answers real questions; add rich schema (FAQ, HowTo, Article) and an llms.txt; build entity and citation signals across sources these models trust; and keep information current. Then measure which answers cite you and iterate.
