WordPress vs Shopify: Which Should You Choose in 2026?
Published June 27, 2026
WordPress and Shopify are two of the most popular ways to build an online presence, but they’re optimized for different jobs. WordPress is a flexible content platform (with WooCommerce for selling); Shopify is a dedicated commerce platform. Here’s how to decide.
The quick verdict
- Pick Shopify if selling products is the primary goal and you want it simple and reliable.
- Pick WordPress if you need a content-rich site, deep customization, or full ownership of your stack.
Head-to-head
| Factor | WordPress (+ WooCommerce) | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Content / blogging | Best-in-class | Good |
| E-commerce | Full, via WooCommerce | Purpose-built, excellent |
| Ease / maintenance | You manage it | Handled for you |
| Flexibility | Almost unlimited | High within its model |
| SEO | Deep control | Strong defaults |
| Ownership | Fully portable | Hosted platform |
| Best for | Content + custom commerce | Focused, scalable stores |
Content vs commerce
The clearest way to choose: lead with your primary goal. If you’re a content-and-community brand that also sells, WordPress puts content first and adds commerce. If you’re a store that also blogs, Shopify puts commerce first and adds content. Both can do both; the question is which job matters most.
Maintenance and ownership
Shopify handles hosting, security and updates, less to worry about, but a hosted ecosystem. WordPress gives you total control and portability, at the cost of maintaining it (or having us do it). Neither is “better”; it’s a deliberate trade.
Our take
Selling-first and want it simple? Shopify. Content-first, highly custom, or ownership-critical? WordPress. And if you want the best of both, we build hybrid setups where WordPress owns content and Shopify owns checkout.
